Tom the Exmoor pony headed to Dulverton this week to announce the launch of the 2022 Exmoor Pony Festival. The festival runs throughout August, with a schedule of events for all of the family, aimed to celebrate the native rare breed Exmoor pony.
The festival was established 10 years ago and is arranged by a group of dedicated volunteer Exmoor pony owners and enthusiasts. Kirsty Urion has been on the organising committee for four years, “We have something for everyone, newcomers to the breed and established enthusiasts alike. Discovering the delightful nature of the Exmoor ponies, especially in their native homeland on Exmoor, is a delight for anyone interested in exmoor, equines or general nature lovers.”
To launch this year’s schedule Tom the pony, who lives at nearby Exmoor Pony Centre, went to meet the residents of Dulverton and spread the word. As a true ambassador of the breed Tom was showcasing the fantastic qualities of these wonderful ponies which is the foremost aim of the not-for-profit Exmoor Pony Festival.
Tricia Gibson one of the event’s Walk Guides is thrilled with the interest in the breed and said that “although taking a walk with her requires sturdy boots, plenty of stamina and a picnic, there is an abundance of offerings in the schedule for all levels; with gentle walks, treasure hunts, meeting the herds and a Fun Day leading the way at making this enigmatic breed more accessible.”
Tom’s public appearance went down a real hit along with the showcase of this year’s events on display at the launch. The festival aims to engage and encourage everyone to discover Exmoor ponies, finding out about the breed’s heritage, their home on exmoor and the people that safeguard the breed for the future.
